Outreach

"Outreach" is an opportunity to give of ourselves by reaching out to others in an effort to follow Christ's commandment to "love our neighbor as ourselves." At St. John's, this is done through a combination of hands-on, active volunteer opportunities and material and financial donations.  It is the hope of the Parish Outreach Commission that, after reviewing the information below, more members of our parish may become involved in our local outreach opportunities.

Blue Hills Healthy Families, 185 Lincoln St., Hingham
The Blue Hills Healthy Families program provides home visiting services to first-time teen parents, living in local towns, from pregnancy through the first three years of their child’s life.  Home visitors offer support with parenting and education, make referrals to other agencies, and help these families toward self-sufficiency through education and training.  The Young Parents Initiative offers similar services to young families up to age 24 who are not eligible for Healthy Families.  Our parish liaison is Nina Leek 781-749-2882 x12.

Christmas Tree Gift Program
The Christmas Tree Program is supported by many of our parishioners who select gift tags from the tree in the Narthex and return gifts to be distributed to children and adults at Wellspring, Blue Hills Healthy Families, the
MaryMarthaLearningCenter, and St. Stephen’s Church, Boston.  Our parish liaisons are Peter Burnett 781-383-9644 and Amanda Santagate 781-848-8202.

Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030
Doctors Without Borders is an independent international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters, or exclusion from health care in more that 70 countries.  Our donation is designated to provide aid to the Darfur region.  Our pairsh liaison is Suki Macri 781-749-1605.

Ecclesia Ministries, 
67 Newbury St., Boston 
Ecclesia Ministries is an Episcopal outreach ministry focused on serving the needs of homeless men and women around Boston Common.  Volunteers are trained in pastoral care skills.  Parishes are offered opportunities to attend worship at “Common Cathedral” and serve a simple meal to the homeless.  Members of our parish attend a service in March.  Ecclesia Ministries operates City Reach, a program that introduces teenage youth to the issue of homelessness.  The Rev. Deborah W. Little created Ecclesia Ministries and is the celebrant for the “Common Cathedral.”  Our parish liaison is Suki Macri 781-749-1605.

Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts - The Gulf Coast Mission
The Gulf Coast Task Force provides medical relief, aid and labor for rebuilding and pastoral assistance to the people of Mississippi and Louisiana.  Our parish liaison is Leah Godfrey  781-749-8991. 
 
Epiphany School, 154 Centre Street, Dorchester 
Epiphany is an independent, tuition-free middle school for children of economically disadvantaged families from
Boston
neighborhoods.  Our parish liaison is Kathy Lanza 781-740-1272.     
                 
                             
Episcopal Relief and Development, Newark, New Jersey
This agency provides emergency relief in times of disaster, assists in the rehabilitation of lives, property and organizations, and joins in partnership with those who identify and address root causes of suffering.  As a parish we give financial assistance.  Our pairsh liaison is Suki Macri 781-749-1605.              

Habitat for Humanity, 28 River Street, Braintree 
Habitat for Humanity
is an ecumenical ministry dedicated to building simple, affordable housing for people in need.  Working with volunteer labor and donated funds and materials, Habitat for Humanity constructs or renovates homes that are sold at no profit to qualified families.  Many parishioners volunteered their time this year to build a home in Hingham.  Our parish liaison is Robert Howard 781-749-8541.

Hingham Interfaith Food Pantry Donations 
One of the ongoing Outreach projects at
St. John’s is the collection and delivery of donations to local food pantries.  Non-perishables (no glass containers, please), toiletries, cleaning supplies and paper products are placed in the baskets outside the church office.  Children may bring items to church school and then deposit them in a basket before they enter church for the Eucharist.  Once a month, drivers are needed to deliver the donated goods.  During 2006 food was collected and distributed to the Hingham Food Pantry, the Mary-Martha Learning Center (Hingham), Wellspring (Hull), and St. Stephen’s Church (South End—Boston).  A sign-up sheet is located in the Narthex.  Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Baskets are assembled in November and December.  Bags are available in the Narthex and a list indicating types of items needed and date due is included.  These monthly activities are accomplished with the help and support of many faithful members of the parish.  Our parish liaison is Margaret Nevins 781-740-3143.

Hingham Seniors’ Lunch 
Members of the parish prepare lunch for the senior citizens at the Council on Aging on an annual basis.  Planning of the menu is done by co-chairs, Nancy Stimson and Sandy Baker, and volunteers are asked to cook and serve the meal.  The Community Service Group of 5th grade children from
PlymouthRiverSchool often assists in serving lunch.  What a time of food, fellowship and fun!  Please join Nancy and Sandy and volunteer.  Our parish liaisons: Nancy Stimson 781-749-0827; Sandy Baker 781-749-0867.

Horizons for Homeless Children, 1705 Columbus Ave., Roxbury             
The mission of Horizons for Homeless Children (HHC) is to improve the lives of homeless children and their families.  HHC provides homeless children in
Massachusetts with the nurturing, stimulation and opportunities for early education and play that all children need to learn and grow in healthy ways.  HHC also connects their parents with the tools they need to achieve social and economic self-sufficiency.   HHC provides leadership in advocating for homeless children and their families through leveraging and sharing their expertise with others and advocating with policy makers and the public.  Our parish liaison is Sally Davenport 781-749-7826. 

Interfaith Social Services, Inc., 105 Adams St., Quincy 
The Interfaith Social Services, Inc. is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian agency serving people of all ages.  Its mission is to serve the community by strengthening family life and by offering assistance to anyone in need.  ISS seeks to ensure that individuals and families from all walks of life have access to food, clothing and counseling.  The parish supports the agency with financial contributions to the food pantry.  Our parish liaison is Ginny Randall 781-749-0975.

Mary Martha Learning Center/Sanger Center,
1045 Main St., Hingham
The Mary Martha Learning Center provides short-term housing for mothers and their children while providing them training in life skills needed to transition to independent living.  The SangerCenter provides a hot meal program, food pantry, and a crisis hot line.  The parish supports the center with Christmas gifts, financial contributions, food contributions, and direct volunteer involvement.  Our pairsh liaison is Sandy Baker 781-749-0867.   

Neighborhood Action - St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 Bowdoin St., Boston 
Neighborhood Action is an active, urban parish that serves dinner every Thursday evening and lunches every weekday to the homeless men and women of Boston.  In addition, Neighborhood Action provides a food pantry and Emergency Clothing Closet.  Members of various parishes throughout the diocese buy, prepare, cook and serve a Thursday evening meal to approximately 150 homeless people in their parish hall.  As a parish, our volunteers buy, cook and serve two meals a year, one in May and the other in September.  Our parish liaison is Allison Marshall 781-749-8591.

St. John the Evangelist Church, Burgeo, Newfoundland
This small, vibrant parish is in the process of repairing the church building and parish hall.  The parish community is neither rich nor large, but has a history of remarkable generosity.  The church serves as the community anchor.  Our parish liaison is Suki Macri 781-749-1605.

St. Stephen's Mission, South End, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 419 Shawmut Ave., Boston
The St. Stephen's Mission has been a vital link in this multi-cultural section of Boston.  Bilingual services are held every Sunday their sanctuary on Shawmut Avenue.  As a member of St. Stephen's Partner Churches, the parishioners of St. John's participate in their Summer Program by providing lunches for the children and staff Monday through Thursday during one week in July, and organizing a lunch and outing in Hingham on that Friday for approximately 100 students and counselors.  We provide gifts at Christmas.  St. Stephen's runs an after-school program Monday through Thursday.  There are opportunities for tutoring, assisting with reading, and helping students with their homework.  Our parish liaison is Nancy Goldthwait 781-826-4545.

Saturday's/Sunday's Bread, 52 Ackers Ave., Brookline
Founded by Homer Platt, this organization has been serving the homeless and poor of Boston for 17 years at the Church of all Nations, and now at St. John's, Bowdoin Street.  Almost 50 churches and organizations are involved in feeding those less fortunate.  As a parish, we contribute financially and with direct volunteer involvement.  Volunteers from St. John's go into Boston multiple times during the year and help set up, prepare and serve a nutritious meal to approximately 100 guests.  Our parish liaisons are Deanna and Julian Fredie 781-843-2520.

Sharing Inc./Good Friday Walk, Braintree Massachusetts
Our parish continues to sponsor this organization which identifies and supports people and organizations working in the rural South who are positively impacting the lives of African American children who suffer the effects of racism and poverty.  Many parishioners participate in the Good Friday Walk to raise money for this organization.  In addition, our parish provides financial support for this program.  Our parish liaison is Donna Ausitn 781-749-8778.

UMASS Medical School International Health Interest Group
Medical students and faculty of the International Health Interest Group travel to the city of La Romana, located in the Cominican Republic, for one week in March every year.  They bring much needed medical aid to the Haitian immigrants living and working on the surrounding sugar cane plantations.  The group works with local physicians and interpreters and cares for 100-150 individuals each day, most of for whom healthcare is virtually nonexistent.  In addition to providing care, they bring essentials such as prenatal vitamins, antiparasitic and antibiotic medications.  Our parish liaison is Ginny Randall 781-749-0975.

Wellspring, 814 Nantasket Ave., Hull 781-925-3211
Wellspring is an active multi-service agency serving the needs of Hull, Hingham and Cohasset.  The agency provides a low-cost thrift shop, a food pantry, holiday gifts and food baskets, counseling and social service referrals, adult literacy and education programs, seminars and support groups, a group housing setting, teen alcohol discussion group, adult alcohol counseling, and the recently opened Wellspring West shop located on North Street in Hingham.  There are many opportunities for volunteers.  As a parish, we provide financial assistance, food contributions, and Christmas gifts.  This year there is a need for volunteers who are able to meet two to three times during the calendar year to plan a fundraiser.  New ideas are needed.  Members of the parish support many of these programs.  The Wellspring executive director is Vincent Hart 781-925-3211.  Our parish liaison is Lyn Wey 781-749-2891.
