St. John’s announces new Curate

The Rev. Eva Dalzell starts July 1

The Rev. Eva Dalzell has been called as Curate of The Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist.

Eva Dalzell.

Eva is thrilled to be joining the staff of St. John’s and, in the process, return to her adopted home of Massachusetts! Eva currently lives in New Jersey, where she is finishing up a M.Div. at Princeton Theological Seminary. While in seminary, Eva has focused on Biblical languages, stories and storytelling, and theologies of historical and contemporary marginalized communities. She completed a unit of hospital chaplaincy training at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick and was a seminarian intern at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Spotswood, New Jersey. She is excited to bring her passions for storytelling, lay discernment and empowerment, and justice work to a community as thoughtful and vibrant as St. John’s.

Before attending seminary, Eva lived and worked in the Diocese of Massachusetts for three years, first as a Life Together fellow (working at the Diocesean Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries), and then as an Interim Director of Youth Ministry at Parish of the Epiphany in Winchester. She is being sponsored for ordination by the Church of Our Saviour in Milton, and will be ordained to the transitional diaconate on June 7. The thing she has missed the most about Boston (besides her friends) is all the urban green spaces, especially Franklin Park.

Eva holds a B.A. in Classics from Washington University in St. Louis and grew up in Washington D.C. She loves to read, and for the last three years has been working as a children’s library assistant (a lifelong dream) at the Princeton Public Library. When she’s not reading for work or for fun, she can be found running, knitting and crocheting, and playing Dungeons & Dragons. She has a cat named Indigo, who reminds her, sometimes by force, of God’s commandment to rest and enjoy the world around her.

From the Rector

I am delighted that Eva will be joining us this summer, and I am excited that she will be sharing her gifts in preaching, teaching, and passion for outreach and spiritual formation with our community. She will be ordained deacon by the Rt. Rev. Julia Whitworth, Bishop of our Diocese, at The Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston, on Saturday, June 7 at 10:30 a.m. She will then officially begin her ministry with us on July 1. Eva will serve as a deacon for six months before being ordained priest sometime in either December 2025 or January 2026. She will then continue to serve the entirety of her two-year curacy among us.

Eva will make an appearance on Sunday, June 8, for our Pentecost services: at our 9 a.m. Eucharist with Baptisms, and at our 4 p.m. Eucharist and Summerfest Celebration! And she will be around a little in June as she settles into life in Massachusetts.

Please join me in congratulating Eva on her ordination and welcoming her to St. John’s, and, of course, with her cat Indigo! And if you would like to attend Eva’s ordination in June, please write to me directly and we will organize a parish trip to the Cathedral!

St. John’s future is bright and we are thrilled to welcome Eva to our community!
